Tartu Under the Horns

Tartu Under the Horns

Tartu Under The Horns (Estonian: "Tartu sarvede all") is a 2022 underground metal documentary directed and produced by Sebastian Dörner of the German metal webzine Undergrounded.de, serving as a sequel to Tallinn Under The Horns (2017).

Filmed in the summer of 2021 amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, the documentary takes viewers deep into Tartu, Estonia's second largest city, to explore its intensely passionate and compact metal music scene. Rather than chasing fame, the film portrays Tartu's metal community as a self-sustaining, creatively fertile, and tight-knit subculture, that has developed its own identity separate from (but still connected to) larger scenes like Tallinn's.

The documentary combines candid interviews, live and archival performance footage, and atmospheric visuals to illuminate how this corner of Estonia embraces extreme metal in all its forms — from black and death-leaning projects to experimental and avant-garde acts.

Tartu Under the Horns

Central themes include:

  • Local scene evolution: How decades of underground activity, isolation from mainstream influence, and tight community bonds shaped a distinctly creative and loyal musical culture in Tartu.
  • Band and artist perspectives: Interviews with influential musicians, scene organizers, label operators and visual artists reveal personal motivations, the challenges of sustaining a grassroots scene, and the everyday realities of making extreme music in a small city.
  • Cross-scene exchange: While focused on Tartu, the film also highlights friendship and cooperation with the broader Estonian and international metal network, including connections forged through events, tours and shared DIY values.

Instead of relying on polished narration, Tartu Under The Horns allows participants to speak for themselves, creating a first-hand, immersive portrait of underground metal life, its culture, its sounds, its struggles, and its creative energy.

Context & Legacy
The film premiered in September 2022 in Tartu's Elektriteater and in Tallinn, accompanied by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and live performances from local bands — underscoring both metal's cultural role in Estonia and the documentary's roots in community engagement.
