Czechia Under the Horns

Czechia Under the Horns

Czechia Under The Horns is the third documentary installment from the German underground metal collective Undergrounded (the team behind Tallinn Under The Horns and Tartu Under The Horns), continuing the series' deep cultural exploration of extreme metal communities across Europe. It focuses on the Czech Republic's prolific Black Metal and Extreme Metal scene, capturing its diversity, history, and unique identity through an immersive, narrative-driven documentary approach.

Filmed over more than three years, the documentary runs over 75 minutes and is structured around in-depth interviews, scene footage, and cultural context. The filmmakers travelled throughout Czechia to document numerous events, performances, and personal stories from musicians, organizers, artists, and other scene participants. Their goal is to portray both the core essence and the lived realities of Czech Metal culture, showing how it thrives through community, rituals, and creative expression — far beyond what mainstream audiences typically see.

Czechia Under the Horns

Key elements in Czechia Under The Horns include:

  • Historical roots and evolution of Czech Black Metal — from pioneering acts to contemporary bands which carry forward a legacy of raw intensity and innovation.
  • Voices from across the scene — personal testimonies from local musicians and artists, as well as international contributors who highlight the emotional, philosophical, and creative motivations behind their work.
  • Live and atmospheric footage of underground shows, rehearsal spaces, festivals, and cultural rituals that define Czechia's Metal landscape.
  • Cultural context — reflections on how the Czech scene relates to broader European Metal networks, balancing local identity with global underground currents.

The documentary's first showing was scheduled as part of the companion programming for Prague Death Mass V, one of Europe's prominent Black and Death Metal festivals. The exclusive pre-festival screening was held 28 October 2025 in Prague's Hells Bells Rockin' Pub, underscoring the film's tight ties to the community it portrays.
